Granville is located 22 kilometers west of the Sydney central business district it is in the local government area of The City of Parramatta, while a small part in the North West is in the local government area of the City of Holroyd.
In 1880 Granville was named after the British Colonial Secretary Granville Leveson-Gower 2nd Earl of Granville. The area didn’t start to grow until after 1855 when it became the final stop on the first railway line of New South Wales.
In the early days timber was harvested to fuel the steam trains in Sydney and Parramatta, and, by the 1860′s the supply of timber had been exhausted. In 1878 Granville received its first Post Office which was a part of the station masters home and in 1880 the suburb was officially named. Vineyards and orchards were planted but it was found the soil wasn’t suitable with the only practical use for the land as dairy pastures.
