Enmore is located 5 kilometers south west of the Sydney central business district; it is under the local area government of Marrickville Council and is part of the inner west area of Sydney. The suburb was named after Enmore House that was built in 1835 by Captain Sylvester Browne a master mariner with the British East India Company. Browne named his house after that of a business associate who had taken the name from the London suburb.
Enmore House was the home of the Josephson family from 1842-1883 when it was demolished. Son Joshua Percy Josephson was the mayor of Marickville in 1901 and streets have been named in honor of his daughters Clara, Laura, Marian, Pearl and Sarah. Enmore is a mostly residential suburb with a commercial strip along Enmore road. The now disused post office on the corner of Enmore and Stanmore Roads was designed by government architect Walter Liberty Vernon.
