Elderslie is located 60 kilometers from the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Camden Council and is part of the Macarthur region.
In 1795 a group of lost cattle had been found in the area earning it the name Cowpastures. A small hut was built at Elderslie near the ford on the Nepean River in 1805 to house two constables to keep watch over the cattle. This was the first house built by settlers in the Camden region. The area was most likely home to the Tharawal people although the Darug and Gandangara people were also known to have inhabited the Camden area.
Wool pioneer John Macarthur was granted 5000 acres in the Camden region which was cleared and used for farming for the next 200 years. As Sydney and the need for land have grown, Suburbs like Elderslie have been subdivided into housing blocks.
