Eastgardens is located 9 kilometers south east of the Sydney central business district; it is part of the City of Botany Bay and is part of the south eastern Sydney region. Originally Eastgardens was part of the suburb of Pagewood, but in 1987 when the huge shopping complex Westfield’s Eastgardens shopping centre was opened in Wentworth Avenue, the area took on the name Eastgardens. The shopping centre brought major retailers to the area including Big W, Coles, Franklins, Kmart, Myers, Target, Woolworths, and a Hoyts cinema and over 200 smaller stores and services.
The site had originally been Government owned land which had been used at one time as a bus depot and also for a time leased to the General Motors Holden car manufacturing plant. Eastgardens is surrounded by the suburbs of Hillsdale, Maroubra, Eastlakes, Daceyville, Kingsford, Pagewood and Banksmeadow.
