East Killara is located 15 kilometers North West of the Sydney central business district, this Upper North Shore suburb is in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council. Killara is a separate suburb to the south west. It was named after an Aboriginal word Killara means Permanent or Always There.
Set in quiet bushland Killara has a small shopping centre containing a real estate agent, liquor store, fruit market, newsagent, Thai restaurant, quilt shop, butcher, pharmacy, hairdresser a bakery and a supermarket. The main road is Koola Avenue which runs from Birdwood Avenue to Albany Crescent.
The suburb has just one school, a public secondary school Killara High School. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Gordon, Killara, Lindfield, St Ives, East Lindfield, Davidson, Bellrose and Forestville. There are no industrial areas here, and homes are large and expensive, this pretty suburb is very green and leafy and attracts a variety of colourful native birds.
