Croydon is located 11 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district. The first developments in this area centered on the northern side of the station around Edwin and Elizabeth Streets. A local resident, Anthony Hordern, built his home called ‘Shubra Hall’ in 1869 here. The south side of Croydon stayed largely undeveloped until as late as early 20th century. Since World War I, little if nothing has changed in Croydon generally. While there have indeed been some blocks of flats built, this account for only = 10% of dwellings in Croydon and most of them are art deco from the 1930s.
